This movie begins with the present where Ayan Sanger(Ranbir Kapoor) speaks about his past love story. One day in a London during a meeting Ayan met with Alizeh Khan (Anushka Sharma) and in a meeting they got to know about each other and then came to know about each other partners that they were cheating on them. Later they breakup with their lovers.

Then Ayan felt in love with Alizeh Khan. But, suddenly Alizeh’s ex-boyfriend came to meet her and they again get closer, and afterward, they both got married. Ayan was totally broken so, he decided to go far from them. Subsequently one night Ayan met a girl Saba Taliyar Khan (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a poet, who is leaving for Vienna. She consoles Ayan and gives him a book with her poetry and number on it. Furthermore, after 3 months Ayan called her and went to meet her.
After that, they became close to each other. One day Alizeh came to meet Ayan then again Ayan develops his feelings for Alizeh. After few days Ayan came to know that Alizeh divorced her husband. So, now Ayan went to find Alizeh, when he meets her, he came to know that she is suffering from cancer and going to die soon so, then he started to be with her to give her happiness.
